Eastern Subterranean Termites

Appearance

Creamy white or gray to brown in color; long, narrow and oval in shape; 1/8 inch long

Region

Found throughout the United States.

Diet: Eastern subterranean termites primarily feed on wood and timber, but will feed on almost anything that contains cellulose including paper.

Habitat: Eastern subterranean termites need moisture to survive, so prefer damp timber and soil. Humid areas in and around the home are perfect habitats, including water-damaged lumber. Swarming typically happens during the daytime in spring, when groups of reproductive termites search to start new colonies. As social insects, they live in colonies typically containing three caste systems; reproductives, workers, and soldiers.

Threats: Eastern subterranean termites can cause extensive damage to a home’s structure and lead to costly repairs. Often, it takes years before a homeowner realizes they have a termite infestation.

Control: Start with reducing any soil or mulch contact around your house. Remove wood, lumber, mulch, and cardboard from around the foundation to create a barrier along your home. It can also help to make sure storm drains are away from your home to lessen damp soil around the foundation. Minimize other sources of excess moisture such as leaky faucets, as it creates conditions for termites to invade.
