Brown Dog Ticks

Appearance

Reddish brown, gray-blue when engorged; basis capituli that come to a sharp outward point on either side; 1/8 of an inch in length, 1/2 of an inch when engorged

Region

Found throughout the U.S. but most common in warmer regions

Diet: Brown dog ticks prefer dogs as hosts, but they will also feed on humans and other mammals.

Habitat: Brown dog ticks can survive their entire lifecycle indoors, which can quickly lead to tick infestations in homes and kennels. They prefer warm, dry environments but can establish a population in colder climates by living indoors.

Threats: Brown dog ticks can transmit Rocky Mountain spotted fever and several other tick-borne diseases including canine ehrlichiosis and canine babesia.

Control: Keep pet areas maintained and free of debris, and regular cleaning of the areas they frequent. Another option is prevention medication that can be prescribed by veterinarian offices for ticks and fleas.
